Advent Calendar from 1946

Beginnings...

If you ask me, December first is practically the most thrilling day on the planet. As someone who lives, breathes, and curates these festive countdowns every single day, there is nothing quite like that pure burst of morning excitement when you crack open door number one. But have you ever stopped to wonder how our favorite holiday ritual actually started?

Grab a mug of hot cocoa, because the backstory of the Advent calendar is pure magic.

Long before boutique countdowns existed, the tradition began in 19th-century Germany. Families wanted a fun, visual way to keep kids from asking, "Is it Christmas yet?" every five minutes. They started marking walls with twenty-four chalk lines to wipe away day by day, burning down notched candles, or tucking a single strand of straw into a wooden manger each morning. Simple? Yes. Brilliant? Totally.

The real game-changer arrived in the early 1900s thanks to a German publisher named Gerhard Lang. Growing up, Lang’s mom made him a homemade cardboard chart with twenty-four little German cookies sewn onto it, letting him enjoy one each day leading up to the holiday. He never forgot that feeling. In 1908, he brought the concept to the printing press, and by the 1920s, he added the little punch-out doors we all know and adore. Behind each tiny cardboard door sat a miniature piece of festive art.

Production took a hit during the paper shortages of World War II, but the love for the countdown never faded. Right after the war, German publisher Richard Sellmer revived the tradition with nostalgic, storybook designs like "The Little Town". Soldiers stationed overseas began sending them back home to their families, turning a local European tradition into a global sensation. By the 1950s, sweet chocolatiers hopped into the mix, creating the classic melt-in-your-mouth chocolate calendar that defined so many of our childhoods.

Fast forward to today, and calendars have exploded into the ultimate seasonal experience. Whether your calendar holds gourmet chocolates, skincare treats, cozy teas, or artisan miniatures, that daily unboxing ritual turns an entire month into a celebration. The anticipation is infectious, the craftsmanship is incredible, and the feeling of wonder never gets old.
